To be lasting, a ceasefire must protect civilians and end all attacks -- Israeli bombings and incursions as well
as the rockets Palestinian factions fire into southern Israel. International supervision is desperately needed at
the borders, to reopen Gaza's borders and crossings for food, fuel, medicine and goods, to prevent weapons-
smuggling (which has only grown under the blockade), and to monitor and enforce the ceasefire on both sides.[5]

Sources say Israel could agree to such a ceasefire, and Hamas, which won elections in 2006 and now runs Gaza,
has suggested it could do so too.[6] Both should be challenged to abide by a fair deal. There is no military
solution for either side -- it's time for world powers to step up and broker a ceasefire to protect civilians on all

Reuters - Mon, Jan 5 - WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. President George W. Bush said today that any agreement for a
cease-fire that puts an end to the crisis in Gaza must include measures to prevent Hamas from using the Strip as a launching
ground for rockets on Israel.

"Instead of worrying about population (Strip) in Gaza, Hamas has decided to use Gaza to launch rockets that kill innocent
Israelis," Bush said to journalists after a meeting at the White House with an official in Sudan.
"Israel has obviously decided to protect themselves." "Any cease-fire must include the conditions in which Hamas does not use
Gaza as a place from which to launch rockets," he added.
Bush said he had met with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice today to a point on the situation in Gaza.
"The United States is worried about the humanitarian crisis. We think of the population (Strip) in Gaza and then we have
provided millions of dollars in new contributions to the United Nations for aid," he said.
"All of us obviously want to see the end of violence," said Bush, adding that the conclusion of hostilities should not be at the
expense of the necessary steps to prevent a return to the crisis in Gaza.
Bush spoke from the Oval Room while tanks, aircraft and Israeli ground forces hit the Strip, the Israeli Minister of Defense
who said that the offensive against the militants of Hamas in the Palestinian enclave will continue until lsraele not deemed to

Palestinian militants responded by launching missiles from the south of Gaza beyond the border, killing one Israeli and
wounding several others, medical sources say.
Dense black smoke rises from Gaza City, where the bodies of dead and wounded lying in the streets after more than 30
air raid that destroyed several security installations, including two buildings where Hamas was holding a ceremony for
new recruits.
Among the dead the police chief of Hamas, Tawfiq Jabber, the head of security of the Islamic group and the governor
of central Gaza, medical sources say.
At the headquarters of the police rescuers desperate shout "Allahu akbar (God is great)" while carrying dead and
wounded. A man seriously wounded on the ground reads verses of the Koran.
The Israeli military said that it had struck "terrorist infrastructure" after days of missile attacks from Gaza toward Israel,
adding that they are ready to extend the operation if necessary, especially against leaders of Hamas.
The Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said that the operation "will not be easy or short."
"There is a time for calm and for a battle, now it is time to fight," he stressed.
Hamas has promised that scatenerà "hell" to avenge their deaths, including suicide attacks in Israeli territory.
